A few years ago I went to Heritage Wetlands to try and find and photograph an Azure Kingfisher. I dipped on the kingfisher, but found a large and diverse collection of insects to photograph instead. I've been meaning to head back there for ages, and this morning I finally did. While I didn't find it crawling with insects like I had hoped to, I still managed to find some interesting photographic subjects.

On 29 September I went to Mangalore Flora and Fauna Reserve where the only insect I saw was a few of these moths.

At Woodlands Historic Park on October 3rd I found an acacia leaf beetle.

last night (19/10), at home, I found a Chlenias banksiaria caterpillar, a regular seasonal occupant of our front yard.

We are lucky enough to get a good population of these beautiful Chlenias auctaria caterpillars every year around home. I first noticed that they had returned a few weeks ago, so I've been waiting for them to get plump enough to photograph. Today I decided that the time was right!

Finally!!! After months of cold weather, the insects are starting to get out and about again. I've spent a lot of the winter focusing on birds (see http://2018birdphotos.blogspot.com/ for more info) but now that spring has sprung, I've dusted off the macro lens (literally) and started looking for some more species for this blog. I only found a few insect species in total on my first macro outing for the season, including Cadmus (Cadmus) crucicollis which is a new one for me, and Calomela ioptera, a species that I've only seen once before. Hopefully more will follow...
